Who are your favorite jazz musicians?

Who are the most interesting living musicians who play Arab classical music, folk music, and Jazz?

  • I am interested because I really enjoy the music of Anouar Brahem, and would like to find musicians who play a similar style (in particular think that the melodies he uses work extremely well for Jazz, that his music flows really well and is specifically not 'intermittent', and that the Oud is just a good instrument). If anyone happens to know a live venue that books people who play stuff like this in New York City, I would love to know about it.

There are many: Dhafer Yousef: Also: Suad Bushnaq   I would also recommend Aziz Maraka:

These are two of my favorite Iraqi songs by Ilham Al Madfai.  I think he might be produced in New York now, so you could check if he plays there. This first song is great!  The second song is great, but a sad song about longing for Baghdad. In addition to the artists mentioned  here, DROM in the E. Village of NYC books this type of music. Thomas Chess and Brandon Terzic are two American oud players that blend styles you might watch for in NYC.
