How To Get Product Key For Sygic?

How do you get into the field of product design without a master's degree?

  • What are the specific skills needed to become a product design consultant? I'm currently a 23 year old Mechanical Engg. Graduate with 2 years of programming work experience and I'm planning to switch to Product Designing. Right now I have applied for Masters in Product Design and Engineering at . I would like to become a Product Design Consultant at some point in the future (maybe 6 to 8 years from now). If I get into said university, then it obviously opens up opportunities to become a consultant in the necessary time-frame. But on the off chance that I don't get in, 1. What are the other ways to get into the Product Design field without a masters degree? 2. And what are the specific skills I would need to become to a Product Design Consultant in the future? Would like to add that I have pretty decent drawing skills. Any kind of advice will be appreciated!

  • Answer:

I finished my Masters in Product Design and am now a product designer. But before i gave CEED ( common entrance exam for design) to get into a degree course I worked as a  product designer in a studio for 6 months without a design degree. If you are not accepted in a design college and u need to be accepted in a design studio or a design consultancy to get into the field of design. These are some ways that may work. A very long answer ! Am sorry for that. Skills: Product design field requires a lot of skills. You can get into the field by being good in any one of the skills. Easiest is to become a digital sculptor. Learn CAD softwares, not geometric modelling but surface modelling. (i guess you know what it means). Apply for a design studio.Design studios will need people who will be able to translate sketches from designers to models. By this you can closely work with a designer to know his ways when he designs a product which means you learn how to design a product. There are other skills too like model making, Engineering ( a engineer who understands the value of aesthetics). that you can showcase to get into a studio or a consultancy. Talent: Design is like sports talent and hard-work are equally important. Any studio will like to have a guy with a talent even if he has no degree.Let me take what you have written. You have good drawing skills. In product design they use the term "Sketching". If you have that talent keep sketching, its practice that become a talent. Keep building your visual library ( visual library means making a library in your mind with a lot of images and styles and methods ). Make a lot of Designs/Sketches. Publish them on Behance, or Coroflot websites. If you are confident about your work send it to all design studios. If they like your work you will get a offer or at-least an Internship. By this you can get into design field. Design Thinking /Knowledge: Although this is the primary thing to get into a design field I keep this last because this skill cannot be showcased as easily as the above two. But this is so vital that this alone can make you a designer. This also can be developed, reading design books, blogs and articles about design, case studies, following design consultancies like IDEO, Frog. Reading about their work. Understanding Human Center approach, holistic approach in design.. There are many ways you can make yourself sensitive to design thinking. The only way to showcase this is to design products and validate your thinking process. You can make a portfolio of products with this knowledge and approach design studios. You can see such portfolios in the internet. Passion: The cliche. It is not easy to make people understand that you have a passion to do design than a degree. I cant explain what is passion so let me explain my interview in the design studio. Interview day: Fully drenched in rain, I reach the studio,6.30PM I had already made a Infographic resume to get my interview call from the studio. (normal resume dint work) and I solely depended on my Solidworks modelling skills to get the job. and they gave me a scientific calculator to model. I could not model that because it was just a month since i learnt Solidworks ...So after long interview about my experience and other questions it ended like this. Manager: I dont see you to have the right skills to be a product designer, you could not even model this calculator. Me: Sir, i can learn modelling. Manager: mmmm... But we need skills pa.. I am not impressed. This is not enough may be if you can improve your skills and then come for interview.... Me: Ok Sir. I may not be able to do modelling, but i can even do excel work if you want to, or accounts. Manager: ???? Quizzical look. Me: I just want to be in a design environment, I like this place and this is exactly what I wanted to do in my life. Manager: :) ok. We will let you know we are interviewing a few other candidates. I got the job as a 3D modeller:) and the was my first step to be a product designer.
