What is game design?

What is the definition of design in game design?

  • How game design fits in design theory? Is a design discipline like  industrial design, graphic design, interface design, communication design?

  • Answer:

Generally "design" is an process to achieve a objective. <For the moment lets not get not the difference between art and design and crafts etc.> In the case of Game Design the objective is to create gameplay versus a user experience, an object (industrial), or a message (communication). Like Game Design can be applied in other fields but is not the primary focus other fields can be incorporated but Game Design's focus is on gameplay with other fields contributing peripherally.

I consider two types of gameplay: one "objective" gameplay which is the design of challenges and actions. The obstacle to overcome and the rules of engagement; and a second "subjective" gameplay which is how the challenge I created is perceived by the user when she interacts with it with the rules I provided. Which one is closer to your definition of gameplay?
