What are some examples of false advertising?

What are some examples of opt-in advertising?

  • I always hear about how you need to "opt-out" of advertising, but what are examples of opt-in advertising?  Is that basically a newsletter?

  • Answer:

In the era of information excess, we're all becoming better at filtering (ignoring banner ads, fast forwarding through TV commercials, etc).  For this reason, opt-in models will continue to become increasingly relevant. Social Commerce sites like & are all opt-in, and serve advertisements on behalf of local businesses in the form of deals. Checking in on , , and other location-based services is a form of opt-in as users are proclaiming their receptiveness to local deals, tips, and other tidbits from brands and small businesses. With the introduction of services like , simply walking in to a store can be considered a form of opt-in advertising.   Newsletters like , , and , are all opt-in, and serve relevant ads to their respective subscriber bases. Completing brand activities are all opt-in, as consumers voluntarily shift attention to advertisers in exchange for charitable donations, virtual currency, etc. There are many more examples, most of which with a recurring theme: value exchange. Opt-in to advertising in exchange for deals, content, virtual goods, etc.

I would classify opt-in advertising as anything that a consumer gives 'permission' for (to use a Seth Godin term, which he coined more than 10 years ago but is still relevant today. Here is an article = http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/14/permission.html). Here are a few examples of permission marketing (opt-in advertising) today: 1. Newsletters (probably the most common) 2. Following a Company on any social networking site. 3. Checking-in to a location using any check-in service (including I would argue- entertainment-based check-ins like GetGlue).

Example companies: AdKeeper - http://www.adkeeper.com - We're a form of opt-in advertising as we make online advertising "keepable" (Save for later).  You demonstrate opt-in by keeping an ad. AdGenesis - http://www.adgenesisdigital.com/, opt-in video based advertising for rewards & deals ASq Video Ad Unit - http://www.bizreport.com/2010/06/rising-tide-co-op-launches-asq-video-format.html - Puts consumers in control of the type of ad experience they'd like to have.  Popular on http://Hulu.com. Preference Central - http://preferencecentral.com/ - Allows you to control the type of advertising you are seeing by controlling a set of parameters. Envaulted - http://www.envaulted.com - The consumer is given a reward for sharing their credit/debit purchase history in the form of cash back & targeted offers. -- Each of these allow the consumer to demonstrate opt-in by asking them to interact as opposed to technology making a fully automated decision.

http://AdKeeper.com again of course! I think great examples of opt in marketing are member rewards programs. You're typically opting in to deal notices, etc. and often getting additional points or rewards or cash back.
