How should I do my project?

How do I make a good case for leaving a project?

  • I'm working with a well known IT firm in India. I joined in Aug '13, completed a mandatory 3 month training (a first-of-it's-kind) and then got allocated to an Internal IT Project(around start of Dec). Now, I wish to leave this project. The Project Leader has me doing low-level clerical jobs. He's told me that soon there will be a 'development project' coming along and that's when I'll be required. But the team grapevine informs me otherwise. The module with this project is associated, does not interest me any longer and I really, really want to work for a client project. I've been asking around if there are better projects with requirements matching my IT skill set and luckily, I've found a few. Now, how do I convince my Project Leader to unallocate me from this current project so that I can join another one? I'm a 'fresher' - a total newbie - to this corporate world, the IT world, bosses, etc. I've spent just 2.5 months in this project but that's enough for me to realize that I deserve a better project where my skills are put to better use. How do I tell my Project Leader so that he's convinced and decides to let me go?

  • Answer:

Sit and talk to him. Discuss about what you are currently doing, and how are your skills are not put to use. I am not sure whether he will agree. Sometimes is is difficult from the PM's view because he will need someone to do that type of work. He may try to convince you otherwise.  I am not being negative , but it looks difficult. The other solution . WIN WIN for both is to: Do this work and along with this, also learn some new skills which will come in handy later.
