Which computer configuration is the best for animation?

Is the camera artist job a completely new role in computer animation or does it come from the old hand-drawn animation?

  • This is a follow-up question to . It is pretty interesting to see all the work that the camera artist does in a computer animated film, but did they do similar things in old style animated movies like Cinderella, just to name one? Disney used camera work and layers to create depth perception and play with focus, but did they also simulate complex things like a particular camera rig movement and so on to tell the stories?

  • Answer:

As far as I know I essentially invented this role here, back during A Bug's Life. It has no analog in traditional animation because it requires being able to edit the camera's animation after the character animation is done. That's unique to computer animation. There may well be someone doing similar work at other studios, but I'm not aware of them.

It is new to cg animation, but not new to film. The camera artist's role mirrors the camera operator in live action film.
