Article 25 are also worth looking into. To quote their own website; ''Article 25 is an operational UK registered charity that designs, builds, and manages projects to provide better shelter wherever there is disaster, poverty, or need. We bring experienced, field-appropriate professional skills and academically rigorous research findings to NGOs who want to build.'' http://www.article-25.org/about-us

Here are two organizations worth looking at - both use design thinking to develop solutions for tackling poverty: Kounkey Design Initiative (http://www.kounkuey.org) and Design Impact (http://www.d-impact.org). The former is more architecture-based, and the latter, more product-based. Traditional non-profits would do well to learn from their approach. Take a look at some of their projects on their websites.

http://publicdisplaysofaffection.ca/ Based in Toronto, from their website: "We are a group of dedicated community members who use design as a tool to shape, build and improve society. We do this because we want to be active members of our community, we see the opportunity for positive change in our community and most of all because we love our community! We are designers, architects, students, community members, volunteers, project managers and creative thinkers, makers and doers."

To keep on the trend of archtecture, MASS Design Group is another one to check out (http://www.massdesigngroup.org). I'd also be interested though in hearing about other organizations or firms either doing interesting things not just in architecture but in any industry that's not usually worked in or an organization/firm that works in a typical industry in unorthodox or innovative ways.

Makesense (http://we.makesense.org/) is an interesting community using design thinking and open source type approaches to help social entrepreneurs (Full disclosure: I'm a member of it)
