What web analytics package do you use if you are not able to use cookies on your Web site?
-
In the EU, legal terms are forcing web sites to make cookies opt-in. This practically makes using cookies impossible. While the legal jibber-jabber is being worked out a lot of large companies are trying to avoid problems and not use cookies. But tracking becomes a problem. What would you use for stats on a site without using cookies?

Answer:
As far as I can tell, you have two options: - Add an opt in option to your site and, as default, disable your web analytics for new visitors and people who did not opted in. You can do that with some coding. I don't know any web analytics tool that provides this option out of the box so you will have to do it yourself. If you want, I might be able to help you, just let me know which web analytics tool you are using. The downside of this option is of course the fact you will not track most of your users. - The other option is to find a tool that identifies your visitors using server side methods (like IP or browser fingerprint). I know that MixPanel uses IP to identify the user but am not sure if the tool will work without cookies. You should contact them and ask that. Our product allows you to do both. In fact, we have a privacy policy management module that allows you to set different privacy policies for different segments so for example, you can define that a visitor from Germany will have to opt in to be tracked while others will be tracked automatically. Well, you could always abuse the rules and take advantage of E-Tag and other options rather than cookies, as KissMetric was once known to do. Of course, they stopped doing that after they received a lawsuit, and ended up settling for $1 million. https://panopticlick.eff.org/ is an interesting experiment to track unique visitors without cookies. Finally, you can simply require log-ins or an opt-in mechanism.
