What are some good vacation destinations in Greece?

  • I plan to be in Greece for a week in June, and would love to hear about your favorite travel destinations. I would love to see some historical sites, but I also see myself sitting in a cafe by the water, reading.

    Hmm, historical sites, quiet, seaside, one week.... Choose one fourth of Crete (you can't do it all in one week!). Chania>Lassithi>Rethymno>Heraklion. You can't go wrong with Crete. Choose a relatively quiet island: Santorini (astonishing), Cephalonia, Lesvos, Samos, Milos, Naxos. Choose a quiet resort in the south of Peloponese: Messenia & Laconia. I really like Mani. Or choose one leg of Chalkidiki (near Thessaloniki). My own favourite places in Greece (not all are recommended to you though) are: Ithaca. Odysseus' home island. Very quiet and picturesque. Close to Cephalonia. Mt. Pelion. The mountain of the Centaurs. Uniquely combines mountain and sea. Close to Skiathos. Gythion, Laconia. The port of Sparta. I hail from there, so I'm biased. Picturesque, excellent beaches. Close to Mani. Koroni, Messenia. Nice memories of childhood vacations. Quiet. Molyvos, Lesvos. The island of Aeolos. Nice childhood memories also. Very picturesque. You can have a look at  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelion which a more alternative way to see the beauty of Greece. It is mountain with lots of small villages and you can visit either on summer or winter. Beautiful beaches around -one of them is where Mama Mia was shot- and many choices to play around: hiking, kayaking, visit the villages & of course lay on the beach. There are also very close to it three islands: Skiathos, Skopelos & Alonissos, where you can schedule a day trip. You will definitely have a great time & a unique experience.

Just to add to Achilleas' answer... Just down the road from Koroni is a little village of Methoni. It's the most Southwesterly point of Greece and has a stunning fortress. It is still quite undiscovered and quiet and, therefore, retains its charm. Would definitely recommend a visit!
