How do I start to work on documentation of an open source project?

I want to work on documentation of a few open source projects. However, I have no idea how to get started. I have asked on the mailing lists as well but there is no reply (as of now and it has been almost a week). One question is if I need to be thorough with the project to write a good documentation?
