What is the current landscape of home delivery services in the United States?

I remember firms such as HomeGrocer generating serious buzz some 5-7 years ago. And there are countless firms that bring meals to the homes of old people. And it seems more food establishments are realizing they must offer a delivery option to remain competitive. But more or less when I think of home delivery, the only thing that really comes to mind is pizza. I know some friends who grocery shop online, but, not many. If a young professional's (or even a family man/woman's) time is worth, say $25/hour (a conservative appraisal), then shouldn't they be willing to shell out solid amounts to consolidate their tasks and free up their time? Or is that a roadblock of home delivery: that most people just don't mind being busy? What are the roadblocks that prevent more firms from the following example types of home deliver: 1. A firm that provides quick delivery of beer and booze to people's homes. 2. A firm such as Dollar Shave Club, utilizing a membership type model, where it doesn't feel like you are paying for a shipment service but rather to be a privy to some special luxury, but with other domestic products that are consumed linearly/predictably and that people generally forget to buy at the store. Products that come to mind include trash bags, paper towels, cigarettes, condoms, shampoo, deodorant sticks, stuff like that. I currently reside in UAE. Everything is deliverable almost immediately. It boosts consumption and makes everything easier for the consumer. Gas is cheap here, which is one thing. But there has to be other reasons this doesn't prevalently exist in America. Ignore the topic of groceries for now. I have this general feeling that people genuinely enjoy the process of going out to the supermarket and browsing. But what interests me is why the market has not yet optimized ways to bring the pesky products and the impromptu goods to people's doorstep. What is the holdup? Is it margins? Is it laws and regulations?

Its possibly because the business doesn't have the opportunity to upsell you or for you to make those impulse buys . Think of all the times you've gone into a retail establishment and bought things you didn't intend on buying. I don't see more mainstream home delivery services happening here until someone figures out a way for the delivery drivers to wear a thousand 5 hour energy's and skittles with a rack of People and Cosmo on their back.
