I think you need to know the best publications in your industry and you need to be reading them. All the time. Not just tech-related stuff, but anywhere. And of course, it can't hurt to read up on news on major publications' websites like http://WSJ.com and http://NYTimes.com because they're all going to have important news updates if there's anything worth noting. That's not the only source, but it's a start. And if you read job postings, you can actually see what skills and education the hiring manager wants applicants to have. So if you need any certification or special skills, it's probably going to be listed and available for anyone to see.
