When can we expect to see a Prime Minister of India who is a Muslim?
-
Note that I'm not asking for someone to be made the Prime Minister just because (s)he is a Muslim. What I'm asking is an estimate of the number of years it might take for a competent person who also happens to be Muslim to be in the running for the post and be accepted by the rest of their countrymen.

Answer:
India will never have a Muslim prime minister but if course it can easily have a prime minister who is Muslim. Yes, there is a difference. If a politician comes to the notice on the basis of working for a particular community and esp minority then it would not work. Akali Dal won't give a PM candidate and neither would there be a Owaisi as our PM as these parties are specifically catering to a minority. That is their limitaion and that is their USP but if we can easily have a candidate from a national party either BJP or congress or who knows CPM who might be a Muslim bit doesn't participate in the politics of appeasing the community he/she belongs. This country do not hate Muslims, APJ was loved beyond limits and guess what despite being a devout Muslim I don't remember him hosting a Iftaar party. The country also loves so many artists from minorities that even thinking of the country as a unit hating Muslims makes me sick.

Yes, I understand the spirit of your question. You want to define a situation wherein being a Muslim will hardly be viewed as a baggage unsolved as yet. In one word, when will the distrust be removed. Automatically, the task of finding an answer boils down to the issue of mutual trust and particularly to the issues that generate mistrust. After all that PM will still be necessarily a politician, but one who is not asymmetrical in his response to critical issues related to the image and strength of the country. India had in the past such Muslim leaders but today the compulsion of Congress (and its allies') politics is such that Muslim leaders who would not generate sectarian emotions would hardly find favour with these parties and their advancements will be impeded. If Muslims of this country can wisely choose leaders who can avoid sectarian mode of campaigning, a lot of trust will be reinstated paving way for a suitable Muslim politician to adorn that seat. There will naturally be many campaigns by many influential Hindus close to Congress, portraying a kind of victimhood of the Muslims to perpetuate the division, but the Muslims will have to look through the motive and stay unmoved in the face of meritorious provocations. The task is simple, but not so easy.

A2A.. I am perplexed at the question. What exactly do we mean by a chance. If you mean probability then yes there it is. However one can not be given any role simply because he/she belongs to a religion. Even Manmohan Singh was not the PM for this reason. There were lot many other factors (not all of them are good) but religion was not one of them. If there is a person with desired skill and mandate, he or she will be the PM. Legally or constitution-wise there is absolutely no restriction. Additionally it is a dangerous tendency to give someone a responsibility only for namesake. Who other than Pratibha Patil can be more apt example of this. Chanakya basically suggested to appoint/elect right person for right job and as we know he is the man to look for, when statecraft is concerned. In case you are subtly hinting if there is a trust deficit then I can only present you some examples: (1) Syed Asif Ibrahim - Chief of Intelligence Bureau (2) Altamas Kabir - Chief Jusstice of India (3) Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi - Chief Election Commissioner (4) Syed Ata Hasnain - Lt. General in Indian Army (5) Idris Hasan Latif - Chief of Indian Air Force I have given the posts which are sensitive and yet we do not hear a single word against these gentlemen. I think I have made my point.

India is a democratic republic. Elections are based on the majority will of the people. It is only a game of numbers. All religion and castes can participate in it. There are many religions, castes, regions and languages in this country. All such divisions have the right to ask for their leadership of the country. But results of elections, are based on idealism and policy matters. Whenever, majority have faith in one person, he/she will be elected to lead the country. Religion is not an issue here.

Those things are only possible in a liberal country. Muslims usually dont vote for secular candidates. If I am a Muslism and demand women rights and animal rights like APJ, how many Muslims will support none? If I am Muslim and demand Child rights and ban on circumcision, how many will vote, negligible. Another problem is Indian Muslims have already created Pakistan for that so why so much interest in India again. Main problem with a such a Prime Minister would be in a case of war with another Muslims country.

A Muslim is as Indian as any other Indian. His chances are as similar as any other Indian. I still wonder why people treat Muslims as different by asking such question. Muslims have leaded India in most of the fields be it Aseem Premi in Corporate, Mohd. Azaruddin in Cricket, be it entertainment field or any other field and we had good number of Muslim Presidents. Am sorry such thinking divide India.

We already whole heartedly accepted a Muslim President, get someone like that and I won't blink before voting for him or her.
