What is an urgent message?

What options are available (free and fee) for SMS text message alert push services?

  • I'm looking for a way to allow visitors to my site the option to A) Scan a Q-Code with their smartphone to subscribe to text message alerts, or; B) Enter their mobile # and go through a confirmation process where they then are sent an opt-in confirmation they must reply YES to, or; C) Send a text message to 555666 with the word in it and go through the same confirmation message. I've tried the Email to SMS gateway method and that will not work for what I'm trying to do because they cannot click a URL from a text message to confirm via the email service (i.e. it's not 100% effective). Ideally something free, but willing to look at fee-based services. To be perfectly clear: This is NOT a scenario where I am looking to blast text message ads to thousands or millions of subscribers. Text only, not MMS. Bootstrapping startup, simple content alerts only, not ads. I am also NOT interested in services that pass the cost on to the end user through a monthly fee on their phone bill per message. What are some of the top solution providers out there that a small startup might use? Thank you, in advance!

You might want to have a look at which is a wholesale SMS API that connects you directly to carriers around the world. It is not free but it is cheap since it is cuts out the fat from the value chain. For receiving you can buy a virtual number costing in most cases less than $0.9/month. In the US, sending SMS costs less than $0.008 and always free to receive. [Disclaimer: I work for Nexmo]

Great questions. I encourage you to have a look at the Msgme Platform (http://www.msgme.com). We offer a QR code solution that you can use to subscribe to text message alerts, either through a mobile web sign up page or a QR code-to-SMS sign up (learn more here: http://www.msgme.com/images/visitor/pdfs/msgme_solution_qr.pdf). For your web sign ups we provide two options. One is an HTML widget so that you don't have to do any coding yourself (http://www.waterfallmobile.com/docs/msgme_html_widget.pdf) or you can use our API to do a direct form integration (http://www.msgme.com/c/DevDoc?page=basics). Setting up an account is 100% free for a one month trial and you can also experiment with the APIs for free. Given that you mentioned your budget constraints, I would highly encourage you to seek out a shared short code instead of a dedicated short code. Not only will you save on lease fees but your time to market will be increased considerably. With Msgme you can start off using a shared short code and automatically port your account over to a dedicated short code if/when you need it. Now, Msgme is paid. For free services I am not sure what else you will find, especially considering the technology limitations inherent with email/sms gateway and long code messaging. You can try these two sites: http://text-message-marketing-review.toptenreviews.com/http://mobilemarketingindustrydirectory.com/
