How do you float a dollar?

Is it a good idea to allow the US Dollar to float as a fiat currency as it does now?

  • A US dollar used to be a fixed weight of silver or gold, now it's backed by nothing. Is it a good idea to have people's savings tied up to a politically rigged system which will dilute it at will?

  • Answer:

Yes. No country currently uses a gold or silver standard - that alone should tell you something.

The dollar is backed by assets held by the Federal Reserve. In theory, that is much better for price stability than a fixed link to one or two particular commodities. In practice, the Federal Reserve has taken too many risks, may not be sufficiently independent, and tells us that 2% per annum inflation (which is high by historical standards and causes prices to double in little over a generation) is price stability. Our current system seems to be better than a gold or silver standard, but there is room for improvement.
