How do I start my own PR firm?

What responsibilities does a PR/Marketing at start up do?  Please list job detials.  Would you still use an outside PR firm if you hae someone in house?  If we had money for PR...how should we apply it?  Would the inhouse person blog, twitter and respond to threads all day?  And the firm would hook

  • Answer:

The job of startup PR is to identify what makes your product/service really compelling, marshall data and stories (think analysts, customers, people in need of your service) behind you, and then help you communicate that story to the right audience.  On in-house v. out...  Having both is ideal; an outside, experienced perspective can make your PR employee way more effective.  And if you have to pare down for budget, I'd spend upfront on media training and getting the story down, and then use in-house for execution (so yes, blogging, tweeting, etc.), and outside PR counsel for strategy, media contacts, and fine-tuning.   Not sure on the in-house paygrade, but good writing is more important than I can tell you, and it's worth paying for.
