Starting a not for profit organization?

What are the main differences between starting a company for profit vs an organization that is not for profit?

  • I have an idea for a business, it's a combination of educational/career advisory and Audio-Visual/Technology. I think if I started it as a for profit company, I would need startup capital, whereas if I started it as a non-profit I could probably get grants (and volunteers). What are the main differences between starting a company one way or the other and is there a "better" way? is one "easier" than the other?

  • Answer:

Here are the key differences between the two: Legal Entity Sales (for-profit) versus Fundraising + Grants (non-profit) Demand from Market versus Willingness to Fund (ie the person who is paying for the service and what sets the limit on growth) Probably more incubation and accelerator type options in the for-profit area.
