What are the elements of Visual design?

What elements of the design mindset retain value the longest, in the face of the spread of design thinking as well as increasing automation, visual stylization, categorizing information, understanding people, etc.?

  • Is the proliferation of design thinking amongst all parts of a company (including engineers) making the design profession obsolete?

  • Answer:

Designers don't have a monopoly on thinking; it seems that's what you're suggesting designers might be losing. Yes, design is a process by which ideas are built up and developed, but that's about as far as we can take the notion. It's up to individual profession to extend the methodology into their own work. There's no profession called "Designer" where you sit around all day thinking, but there are different kinds of designers. Graphic Designers, Industrial Designers, Experience Designers, Fashion Designers, Automotive Designers, etc etc. If you truly are worried about this, then i'd recommend getting down off that high-horse. Others having this knowledge does not degrade our craft; it improves theirs. If anything, the practice we call design is expanding to other areas because its an effective way to approach creation with a purpose.

I want to reiterate and promote Asa Sherrill's answer, because it's good and right. Also, I think what you're really asking is how to do and continue doing one job for as long as possible and that doesn't really exist / nor should it. 'Design thinking' is just problem solving that somehow got itself rebranded. You can problem solve in literally any field, in any profession, with or without the proliferation of something so minor as programmers learning UX or startup founders learning ID. If you become a good problem solver, people will continue to pay you to solve their problems. They're endless. You'll probably solve tons of different problems across a lifetime, and that's a good thing. Solving the same one over and over is ultimately unsatisfying anyway.
