Why do people live in Mumbai?
-
It is my first day at Mumbai. This place looks like a total mess and is a planning disaster. Offices are on different planet as homes. Transport sucks, sea has very small beaches. Everything is so expensive. There is no peace. These is no place to live. Walk all the time and walk even more. No shopping malls. No public amenities. Local trains suck, local train stations suck.Old building everywhere you look. No water.Much crowd. Much chaos. Why live in Mumbai. I just don't understand why. This place just exhausts especially for someone coming from Delhi, where metro is kickass. Why do people live in Mumbai, I just don't get it. Better live in a tier 2 town.in spite of all this why do people love Mumbai so much and choose to live here.

Answer:
I was born and brought up in Mumbai. I have stayed in Pune, Surat, Guwahati among other places. I currently am in Delhi. You will have an answer yourself after 5 or 6 months. Meanwhile, observe closely. If you do, you will find beauty beneath the chaos. Old buildings everywhere ? Don't agree on that. Rather Mumbai looks like a place which is always under construction. Expensive? Mumbai is as expensive as you want it to be. There are people who live on less than Rs.100 a day and people for whom , I imagine, even a lakh won't be enough.Transport sucks? No.You will find buses playing till at least 1am. Trains till 2am and rickshaws/taxis round the clock. There is never an issue of connectivity. I completely agree when you the local trains suck.I don't know in which part of Mumbai are you holed up (Im guessing somewhere near Chembur), but no shopping malls ?? Go to LBS road. There is one shopping mall every kilometre (that might be stretching it a bit, but you get the point) I don't think people live here for the infrastructure. People live here for the opportunity. Many because they have no other option. When I say people , I am not just talking of the educated middle class junta, I am speaking of all kinds of people. Mumbai is a great leveller. It is a struggle for everyone involved. Be it a construction worker or a builder and I think most of the people are aware of that fact. But that feeling you get when after a day of slogging you take a walk on Marine Drive with the cool breeze caressing your face, you will feel that it was all worth it. You will then take a taxi, go to Churchgate and take the fast back to Andheri gearing up for the struggle next day. Everyday, you will find something new in this city. To survive Mumbai, you need to be humble and find a way to have a laugh. You will find enough things to crib about the city, but once you start doing that you will soon get exhausted. For example , take a look at the new waterfall in the city Ofcourse you can crib all day about the administration and all you know, but of what use it is. Rather go out hold your legislator accountable during elections. Meanwhile, have a laugh. Mumbai is unlike any other city in this country.A 3 min video about what is Mumbai all about. http://www.storypick.com/short-film-captures-spirit-mumbai-local-trains-less-3-minutes/ Give a month or 6 months or a year probably, I assure you that you will get the answer. If you still are so pissed off, you can always move back to the tier 2 city called Delhi :P

Kareena Kapoor said in Jab We Met, â log bolte hai Bombay bohot crowded hai. Crowd hum jaise logo se hi toh banta hai. Khud bheed ka hissa hai and bheed se problem bhi hai ( People say that Bombay is very crowded. The crowd is made of people like us. They themselves are a part of the crowd and still complain about the crowd).Mumbai, the city of dreams has intrugued millions. Coming from a different city, I can understand the initial confusion and frustration that you feel. However, you will get used to this city soon and once you do, you'll fall in love with the city and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.TRANSPORT:Although it is true that the transport time is a lot, the public transport system is efficient. We have some of this : Local trains : We have three lines, central, western and harbour. You need to download apps like m-indicator which give you complete information about what train to take from where. You need to be smart about local trains. There are peak times when they are extremely crowded, however, during the rest of the day, you can easily get on the train and stand comfortably. However, you might not get a place to sit. Mumbai Metro : We already have one metro line going from Ghatkopar to Versova, other lines are under construction and they'll be ready soon. Mumbai metro is not as crowded as the local trains, and people actually queue up before the train comes onto the platform. Monorail : And we have this monorail running between Chembur to Wadala. Here's a little snap. BEST buses, autorickshaws and taxis : These are super convenient and you also get share rickshaws and taxis, which is essentially like a carpool with reduced fares. We have air conditioned buses too. FOOD :You will never find a dearth of cheap eateries in Mumbai. Download zomato to browse the nearby restaurants and you will be set for life. Tiny restaurants are nestled in every part of the cities, where you can easily find cheap food. Standard Mumbai snack includes wada pav which you'll get for INR 10 per piece in every nook and corner. And then there's street food. Street food is delicious. You get anything and everything on the street, from dosas to pastas to juices to pizzas. You just need to find a guy who's hygienic enough. Just to give you an idea, you can get a dosa for INR 20 and a vegetable sandwich for INR 15. This is as cheap as it can get. For cheap food, try going to restaurants near the local railway stations. MALLS :My friend, in case you haven't been able to find malls in the city, you seriously haven't been to the right areas. I don't know what kind of malls you are looking for, but there are extremely huge malls and extremely tiny malls too. Everything is available, right from designer labels to roadside stuff. Some malls in my city:Phoenix Market City, Kurla: High Street Phoenix, Lower Parel : Viviana Mall, Thane : R City Mall,Ghatkopar : Korum Mall, Thane : Inorbit Mall, Vashi : Our roadside malls : NEW BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION :Mumbai is a historical city and naturally, some construction is quite old. However, with the redevelopment projects, all the old buildings are being renovated. Most of the city parts have new and modern buildings. This picture encompasses the soul of Mumbai. This shows an old construction along with modern construction in the background, perfectly capturing the beauty of Mumbai.HANGOUT PLACES :Nariman point : This is the most famous place in all of Mumbai. Come here anytime in any season, you'll feel a sense of peace and calm engulf you amidst the crowd. Bandra Band stand : Near Carter Road : Juhu Beach : Chowpatty: Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Learn to love the good things about Bombay. The people are warm, helpful and accepting. You won't be judged here, you'll learn to live and let live. There is happiness in the smallest of things, like watching the sunset at nariman point amidst the numerous crows, or taking a walk with your friends on the beach, or walking in the rain sharing an umbrella with a loved one. These are priceless moments. The city has a lot to offer, learn to seize the lovely offerings.PS : None of these images are my own. They have been taken from Google for representation.

âYe Hain Mumbai Meri Jaanâ(This is Mumbai, My love) I take liberty in answering this question for two reasons : I was not born in Mumbai and i am not a Maharashtrian. Being a Delhiite, I think i too had some biased opinions about this marvelous city at first. Itâs been 8 years now, and i still havenât been able to find one single inadequacy. One can go on talking about the glories of Mumbai, but you must realize that you cannot appreciate the beauty of anything unless you suspend your preconceived notion. Having said that, A day is not enough to sink in the depth of this city. It is very natural for you to feel uncanny in a place that you have just moved to. Give it time, and before you know, You will yourself jump up to answer your question. What differentiates Mumbai from the other cities is itâs Vivaciousness, Simplicity and Motivated environment. To answer your question more briefly, Transportation : The primary means of transportation, LOCAL TRAIN! It is true that Mumbai locals are crowded, Over crowded even, but a mumbaikar canât imagine a day without it. Not only is it economically feasible, but also very reliable. People in Mumbai might not remember their Birthday, but they could tell you even in their sleep, Which local train to take and when.Itâs awe-inspiring to see how self-reliant people are in Mumbai. From my own first experience of the local train station, I can say this. When i first went to the station, I sat there on a bench waiting when a local train arrived and came hundreds of people gushing out of the door. I literally held on to my seat for a minute, surprised at the swift motion. Right then, I saw a woman fall down (almost between the platform and the train!) and before i could even get up to help her, She flung back on her foot and sped through the crowd rapidly. I was awe-struck for about several minutes. Apart from this, Let us not forget that Mumbai not only has Metroâs now but they also have Indiaâs first Monorail. Which is a very proud thing for us!2. PEOPLE : The thing about Mumbai is you go five yards and all of human existence is revealed. It is an incredible cavalcade of life.People in Mumbai are extremely humble and generous. They do not care about who you are and what you do, When you are in need of help, Mumbaikars will always be at your side.3. INDEPENDENCE : I am an 18 year old girl, recently graduated from High school. Independence is all I need right now.Anybody and everybody in Mumbai is Independent. Nothing stops you from moving forward. Here, Starting from the youngest to the eldest have a basic gift of freedom in their lives. It offers a safe and healthy environment. If you live alone, Something will always make you feel a part of the crowd here. You may not know who the man who stands across you in the local train or what his name is, but you will still look out for him everyday. 4. Old buildings? (Oh, The beauty of the authenticity!)5. Malls and shopping arcades : I think it is safe to say that Mumbai is both extensively famous for itâs street marketâs and for itâs Lavishly build Malls. If you want to buy clothes, no doubt you can do it in style at the high-end boutiques in Bandra or the large malls in Worli, Andheri and Lower Parel. But nothing beats a Mumbai street shopping experience. Every class of the society can be found bustling across these street markets to grab their hands on the latest trends in such fair rates. Not to forget the communicative street vendors! 6. FOOOODOh, The finger licking deliciousness of the authentic food in Mumbai. Of course you've had to grab a Vada pav, Haven't you? You might complain about not being able to find a Momoâs on street (I've been there!) but gradually you'll come to get used to the authentic food of Mumbai because YOU CAN NEVER GET WORN OUT OF IT. Not just the Street food, But the vibrant places such as Candies, Theobrama, Indigo.. Try and take me out of there, I bet you can't! O7. NIGHTLIFE IN MUMBAI IS JUST VIBRANT, ITâS CRAZY!Youâll get all the peace you want when you sit back and relax on Marine Drive or Tata garden in Breach candy gazing at the silent water. OR you can groove in to your highest level of energy at the cityâs Dynamic Clubs and Lounges. It is indeed true, Mumbai never sleeps. What makes Mumbai an ideal place to live apart from these facts is that You can find pleasure in even the smallest things. There is a solution for everything and itâs pure in a very neat way. You can find joy even out of a little conversation with the Richshaw driver, and you can laugh with absolute strangers. You just need to feel it within you. You need to learn to live the Bombay wayMumbai runs through the body, really.(Image source : Google Images)
