How do i create virtual subdomain using htaccess?

Is it possible to set up another Wordpress blog on a different subdomain using multisite?

  • I currently have a Wordpress 3.0 blog running in a subdirectory on my current domain (i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/blog). I was wondering if it would be possible to enable multisite on this instance and create another blog at the root of a subdomain (i.e. http://otherblog.mydomain.com) Would this be possible by enabling the multisite feature on my first instance?

  • Answer:

Yes.  It's really all .htaccess. The main drawback, however, is how many plugins don't work on Mu. If your web host has an auto-installer, it may be just as easy to install and maintain two sites as a mu, and that gives you all the benefits of the full-version.  My web host has installatron, so I maintain 30 separate blogs, because going from 3.0 to 3.1 on all 30 of them is less than a five minute process, combined.

As Colin said, yes it is. With Multisite, you have an option of setting it up for subdomains or subdirectories. If you use subdomains (instructions are included in WP 3.x) then that's all the setup you need. You'll have your main WP install on your domain and then you can setup as many WP Multisite installs on subdomains just by creating the sites. And while it's true that fewer plugins work on Multisite than on a single site - many actually do work now that WP has dropped the separate MU program and have single and multisite on the same set of code. As for the install - go with a cpanel or any of the other 1click installs on whichever host you use. The WP install is about as easy as it gets.

You can also use Multi Network and setup completely separate sites on their own domain. So instead of creating a subdomain like http://blog2.domain.com you can create http://blog2.otherdomain.com This allows you complete separation of sites yet can still share users. Yes you can set up a different blog on your subdomain as long as it is a standalone install. Come and join us on http://seo-specialist.net/seo-education/ free education to help you with online efforts.
