What should I do to become an IAS officer?

Does a PGDM from IIM or an MBA from any other good college before joining services make an IAS officer become a better public servant?

  • AIM: I feel very happy when I develop my skills and use them to the betterment of society. In parallel to the career as a public servant, I have interest and some idea about improving the primary education and the involvement of people more in the democratic process(like electing better representatives) through NGO. MBA: I came to know from internet and my friends at IIM that MBA at a good institution teaches you the skills to run an organisation efficiently from the leadership and business perspective. So, I feel that an MBA from IIM will enhance my skills to reach my goal of making world a better place as an IAS officer later.I feel that with education at IIM about various aspects of business(like finance, sales, marketing),I will be a better decision maker as an IAS officer, since Government is also a company where people are the equity holders. Dilemma: But, from internet and answers on Quora , I came to know that there will be opportunity for an IAS officer to go for higher education(like MBA) after 9-10 years of service. However, I think an MBA now will make me a better public servant from the inception of service. So, my dilemma is whether to do an MBA now or not. Does it make a good difference in my work as a public servant? If I appear for CAT in 2014, I need to do my MBA from 2015-17 . By then, I will be 25 and will have to prepare for Civil service exam from 25. Can you please help me in this decision and provide your view on this?

  • Answer:

Definitely it will be helpful. There is an investment of few years however you will also have a chance to get a better idea of what you want to be.

I have not any MBA but joined the service directly after doing my B Tech in 1983. But having aMBA  degree specially in Developmental economics will give you a much better insight and skill to handle the complex world today. However, one hint in Civil Service which you must learn and they don't teach this business schools is the art of tact and managing conflicts.

If u r a fresher and preparing for UPSC, my sincere advice is better concentrate on UPSC and become a civil servant.I don't mean any  offence but not every one without work ex can approach a problem with "out of the box" thinking my friend.Your work as an IAS officer teaches u more about the world rather than your degree.  Moreover, to be frank, being a civil servant itself develops your skills in resource management friend.Man management-HR, Funds allocation-Finance, Delegating duties-operations , Publicizing and implementing welfare schemes- Planning and marketing.  You will be developing all the above skills during ur  first 7-8 years of service surprisingly without realizing. Afterwards, if you think that u lack something, then u can get into an IIM. Learning form your mistakes is an important http://phase.Ithttp://hase.It weighs your character, integrity, attitude. Its not advisable to learn everything without committing any mistakes.

Consider two people A and B who want to play a sport. A has already played another sport at national level while B has not. Now in the new sport will A not have an obvious advantage? Same thing goes here. Replace new sport with IAS and old sport with IIM. It will help immensely.
