Why do companies use recruitment agencies?

What key criteria do companies use to evaluate regional and global PR agencies?

  • In some pitches, that criteria is explicit in the RFP process and in others it is opaque.  Additionally, there's the public reasons versus the real in-house reasons, with agencies left to scratch their heads on some of the decisions made by prospects. What are the real reasons why some agencies got the gig and others not?

  • Answer:

Agencies are selected (or not) for a variety of reasons and each agency search should have specific criteria to the search that is underway...therefore, it is misleading to assume that there is a single 'best' set of criteria for all searches.  With that said, criteria can include: relevant experience, depth of resources, importance of the client to the agency (aka 'big-little match up'), chemistry/rapport between the client and agency, writing ability, ability to challenge assumptions and pre-conceived ideas of the client, creativity, etc.

Michael Neuwirth gives a great list. I would add one more criteria: ability to listen.  In the past, I've put together very explicit RFPs. The strength of the presentation was weighted toward the agency that read the RFP and presented according to what we were looking for. In one case, for example, I wrote that we were looking for strong media outreach specifically. Six agencies presented their standard "dog & pony" and one came in with a presentation on how they focus on media relations, pitching and outreach. Guess who was brought in to present to the management team?
