How to I calculate the average P/E of a particular industry?

Are PE or SE licenses necessary or desirable for work in the oil and gas sector in America?

  • Is it necessary to be a professional engineer (have a PE) for any type of work in the oil and gas industry? I know that many engineers don't but are there any specific roles that require it? Does it help to have a PE when you're trying to get hired?

  • Answer:

Necessary? no, of course not. There are many who do not have a professional license, but still hold engineering positions in this field. However holding a P.E. or S.E. license is always considered a positive on an applicants resume and is often required for higher level positions. The amount and types of work in the Oil & Gas sector is hugely diverse, and if you want to climb to the highest echelons, a license is almost a necessity. Obviously it is if you will be the responsible engineer in charge and stamping documents.

In petroleum engineering no one really cares if you have a PE.  Work experience is what counts.
