What does it take to be a computer student?

As a computer science student with a strong grasp of algorithms, data structures and discrete mathematics, (but with no experience or coursework in machine learning) what things should I do to learn what it takes to take part in Kaggle contests?

    Brush up your mathematics skill. You will need them a lot for machine learning. Mainly study Linear Algebra ,Probability and Multivariable Calculus. MIT OCW can help you a lot. For ML good knowledge of mathematics is as important as algorithms For machine learning Andrew Ng’s lecture on youtube are good starting point though a bit heavy for beginner. You can also try his course in Coursera which is much easier. Be comfortable in Matlab/R or Python(Numpy-SciPy). They will allow you to prototype easily
