Is it standard for freelance writers to have a portfolio?

Where can I find some examples of the freelancer portfolio for the writers?

  • Answer:

There are several places you can use to house your samples. 1. https://contently.com/ is a platform where you can upload your guest posts and blog posts. They track the views and social shares which is nice for many clients to see (i.e how valuable your writing is in genearting leads). 2. Pinterest – you can have a "portfolio board" and list all your samples there. Here is my first row of my Pinterest board: 3. LinkedIn – LinkedIn is a great online resume and place to find clients. Fill out your bio completely and add your samples there. For me, I added my writer website and then uplaoded my guest posts there. Here is what it looks like: It's not ideal, but it's a place. 4. Your Website – as mentioned in other answers, your website is the best place to house your portfolio. You can post them as links or use a WordPress plugin. Here is what my Portoflio looks like: I hope that helps!

I agree with - having your own website is the best way to do it.  If you aren't technical, try using a Wordpress template and calling on a friend to help you if you get stuck. I also referred people to my LinkedIn profile for writing samples before my website was up and looking good. My own portfolio (http://kathieirwin.com/portfolio/) is pretty basic, just links and then three lines briefly describing what the article or report was about. I've seen much fancier ones and for a while I considered shelling out a few thousand dollars to have one designed for me. I decided to pass-- my writing skills can speak to my talent and don't need a fancy design to bolster them. So don't be afraid of keeping it simple!

If you are a freelance writer, it would be perfect if you could maintain a website of your own. Making it short and simple, keeping the elements like: Home page, about page, services you provide, and few samples of your work. If you are not ready yet to go online, you could start practicing at http://wordpress.com to maintain a site for your own. This is one of the best idea as the site would be the ultimate portfolio for your work. Alternatively each and every single article, newsletter, blog post or any other form of essays or prose in your wordpress site could be regarded as your portfolio. You could also try writing articles in article submission sites and increase your reputation there. In these cases you could write ezine articles @http://Ezine.com or you could write Hubpages @http://Hubpages.com or Squidoo @http://squidoo.com For more ideas you could ask me.
