How to Market my idea?

How do I go from idea to market, keeping control of the idea?

  • If I were to have a genius idea, but have no method to build a prototype or design a fantastic app or website, how would I approach a manufacturer or designer without them just stealing my idea? How would I protect what I presume is my intellectual property?

  • Answer:

You can file a US Provisional patent. Cost is about $250. You simply describe in as much detail as possible how you plan to implement your idea.  After you file it, you have one year to file a non-provisional patent application. Hopefully within that time you will find investors or you may realize that your idea is not that great after all. http://www.uspto.gov/patents/resources/types/provapp.jsp

Ideas are not really protectable as such. It is products and services, and their technology (and identification) that are protectable. First develop your product or service up to the point where you feel confident you can go to market - then check on whether it is worth spending the money on a patent (assuming you've done something really new). For most startups, it's not really an issue. And don't worry, chances are someone else had the same idea already - the real strenght in go-to-market is in the way you implement your idea. So : go for it, develop your product, talk to people about it, and get as much feedback as you can. Then find customers. Good luck with it!
