How do you record a video chat on a Macbook Pro?

How can I record HDMI video on my MacBook Pro?

  • Macbook pro 15inch - no express slot

  • Answer:

Rightyo .. worked it out..   One ADVCV-HD50 converts HDMI to firewire. MacBook Pro (Wirecast & iMovie) recognise the HDMI input - even better, can put two (& possibly three) on a high speed firewire hub. So can do live HD quality broadcasting & editing from one MacBook Pro. Apple could make it easier though..

I used a blackmagic HD capture device with USB which directly encodes H.264. The question you need to be clear on is, is the HDMI protected with HDCP? In that case it is very difficult because you aren't allowed to record protected HDMI without permission and almost every device won't do it. I have purchased devices which remove HDCP but my preferred manufacturer asked me not to tell anyone that their product could do it. The best known HDCP stripper is the HD Fury but I didn't normally use that.
