If I am getting CSE at BITS Pilani and chemical engineering in all IITs, ECE or CSE at NIT trichy which one should I choose?
-
p.s- chemistry is my favorite subject and I am also equally interested in ECE, but I would have to start from scratch for CSE. So advise me based on this.

if you are getting chemical in all IITs(i.e bomaby and delhi) then you can definitely get CSE or ECE or M&C in IIT guwahati according to your rank, and all these branches are much better than the choices you are considering right now. ps: i am an IIT Guwahati alumini so I can only say about my college with certainity.. hope it helps...

I am a Chemical engineer from IIT M. The answer for the question varies depending on what you exactly you want from 4 years of college education. BITS and IITs don't differ much except for the IIT tag. But nevertheless BITS also has high reputation across globe. So your question comes down to which branch you should choose; chemical or CSE..?? If you are planning for a MBA/MS/PhD later, there wont be much difference between the both groups. If you want to just pursue any job in the particular discipline, choose CSE (High pay with considerably less effort) over Chemical engg (less pay-less effort: High pay only if you are top of class). If I were you, I'd have chosen BITS CSE (Only Pilani campus). Don't ever chose NITs over BITS PIlani/ old IITs. They are not even comparable with IIT/BITS.

Firstly, don't compromise on your branch because in the long run, the choice of branch does come into the picture.IF you really want to do CSE, BITS Pilani is a good choice and so is NIT Trichy.BITS is a private college,so its fees might be a bit high if that is an issue. If it's not ,then BITS Pilani is a good choice for CSE.NIT Trichy could be your option otherwise. This is only if you're really interested in pursuing CS.If you're interested in chemical, then obviously the IITs is a better choice.

Being from (Chemical Engineering) ChemE, I think I should write a bit about it. There are some misconceptions about ChemE which I think I should dispel first. ChemE has almost nothing to do with chemistry. It is much more inclined towards Physics and Mathematics than Chemistry. Some general opinion about ChemE at IITM (I assume its the same over all IITs) IITM chemE can be classified broadly along these lines : Systems & Control Computational Fluid Dynamics Polymers Reaction Engineering Transport Phenomena I'l try to give a very brief description of each of these. The course curriculum would involve basics from all these areas but it would be only one course. You can choose which area to specialize in after that and take electives only on those lines. Hence IITM is very flexible. Systems & Control IITM has a strong inclination towards the mathematical side of ChemE. Hence by extension has a very strong group in Systems (http://www.che.iitm.ac.in/scg/). To give a brief idea about Systems Engineering, it involves topics like Optimization, Data mining, machine learning, System Identification and Process Control. These topics are generally interdisciplinary and contain elements drawing from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation and Control. This area generally appeals to those interested in mathematics or computer science. I would say IITM has the best systems group in India. Career in these lines would mostly lead you to statistical process control, quality control and the likes. To put it very bluntly, it is CS + elec + chemE combo. (I am right now involved with the Theoretical Computer Science group at IMSc working on complex networks and probabilistic graphical models and I didn't take a single course in CS, all my courses were in Systems) Computational Fluid Dynamics I would direct you to this answer of mine : . CFD is basically computer simulation of how fluids move in different situations. CFD is done many departments like mech, chem & aero but each with their distinct flavors. Aero primarily focus of gas flows while chem and mech focus on liquid state. Polymers You will study polymer formation and how to control such reactions. Basically if you might want a particular sequence of polymer chain, you'l study how to get only that and not others. This has a little bit of chemistry but very minimal. This area also draws heavily from stochastic calculus and probability since you can never say whats going to happen with certainty, so everything is in terms of probability. Heavy use of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Carlo_method which is one of the hottest areas in every field. Reaction Engineering This is generally what people have in mind when hearing chemE. It is concerned with how to produce high value chemicals in large scale, how to build and control reactors etc. Transport Phenomena Think of diffusion, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motion, heat transfer etc. This area is basically concerned with how mass, momentum and energy are transported from one point in (space, time) to another point in (space, time). This is direct application of physics and is very similar to electromagnetics. (Instead of using Maxwell's equations, we would use Navier Stokes equation & allied equations which describes fluid flow). I would advice chemE if you are excited by one or more of the above areas. Also to some extent the career opportunities for ChemE are much wider than most other branches since chemEs are jack of all trades and master of one (whichever you choose). Systems & Control especially is extremely suited for data analytics or finance careers since they are directly related through stochastic processes and applied probability.

Firstly, chemistry isn't necessarily the same as chemical engineering. Chemical engineering would involve quite a bit of mathematics, physics and even economics apart from chemistry. I am not very familiar with the course curriculum for chemical engineering but you could always talk to Chemical Engineering and Chemistry students to see what they have to say about their respective subjects and whether they align with your interests. Also, you might wanna check these links out to understand the difference a little better. If you are really passionate about chemistry, you could even go for an MSc course at the IITs. ECE, again is not just about ICs, semiconductor electronics, circuits and whatever it is that you maybe having in mind right now. Go for ECE if you are particularly good at mathematics, especially probability, complex numbers, calculus and functions. You will also have to deal with quite a lot of coding. So, if coding is something that you are not very keen on, ECE may not be a good choice. Having said that, even if you aren't confident about programming now, you can always learn things from the internet. There are numerous online courses available absolutely free of cost (edX, Coursera, MIT OCW, Udacity to name a few, are very useful sources). CSE will definitely involve a lot of programming. However, if you do not hail from a very financially sound background and would like to work after your B.Tech, CSE might as well be your preferred choice. As I mentioned, there is no need to feel daunted because of your lack of exposure to programming. The internet will hopefully take care of that. If you decide to take up CSE or ECE, I think BITS Pilani would be a better choice since ECE and CSE departments are not as fundamentally strong as the core departments ( Mech, Electrical, Civil etc) at the NITs in the sense that these departments may suffer from a lack of faculty. Again, I do not know specifically about NIT Trichy. So, do consult others before coming to a conclusion. Summing up, definitely go for Chemical Engineering if you are sufficiently satisfied with the course curriculum (preferably at Bombay not just because IITB has been doing really well over the last few years but also because Mumbai is a fantastic place to live in). Go for ECE at BITS Pilani if you have a thing for mathematics and go for CSE if you feel confident enough about overcoming your apprehensions over your apparent lack of programming skills. All the best. Thanks for the A2A.

Thanks for the A2A. It sort of depends on what you want. If your primary aim is a great domestic placement or further studies (Masters/PhD) abroad, BITS Pilani CSE is the way to go. If you want onsite jobs from companies like Shell or Schlumberger, or if you do not care so much about the branch, and want to be open to opportunities in both engineering and finance/consulting/non-engineering fields, choose Chemical engineering (in the top 5 IITs only). I would ask you to choose either IIT Chemical engg or BITS CSE and leave NIT out of the equation.

BITS CSE > CHEM in IIT > NIT trichy for me Let us divide this into 3 cases 1) College 2) Package or job oppurtunities 3) Interest (As i feel you don't have any clarity right now) 1) There is not much difference between BITS and IIT. I am presently working as an Intern at Paypal and came to know that students from IIT's and BITS are considered the same.I think this is enough about Institutes. so for colleges it is IIT ~ BITS > NIT 2) CSE > ECE > Chemical 3) Coming to your interests the answers from , can help you in Chemical Engineering. If you are more interested in Coding, puzzles,Maths then choose CSE. Consider Maths and Computing into consideration also. But you may miss some fun which is available only in IIT's and the 'IITian' tag too. Do consider them

I am at ECE at NIT Trichy, and I can tell you that the faculty for ECE and CSE are pretty good. They are very active in research and help students a lot. Our ECE program can be ranked in the top 5 in the country. Our infra may not be good, but our student quality, faculty and placements are as good as ECE in older IITs. So dont underestimate us. Take ECE if you seriously love it at NITT. But for chemical go for the IITs. If your interest is in CSE, go for Pilani then NITT, in terms of placements only and no other reason.

IIT brand is very valuable . it is much better than BITS IIT Bombay is the best of IIT's (you probably knew that) , IIT Bombay Chemical engineering would be a great choice BITS Pilani CSE is much better than ANY Branch in ANY NIT. people who come to BITS have come there with their own merit and not some cheap Caste or State quota reservations. The quality of students is very good in BITS. When it comes to comparison of IIT's and BITS one cant say exactly but BITS is surely better than all the NON CORE IIT's as for inclination towards any particular branch , you just cant be sure. there is no way you'd know you would like a branch or not based on your intermediate /(+1 &+2) studies P.S : Chemical Engineering doesn't involve much of Chemistry Chemistry learnt in high school is a lot different from chemical engineering in high school chemistry is all about some basic ground rules and involves the need of good memorizing ability. in fact chemical engineering is more of physics and mathematics. if you enjoyed your fluid mechanics in physics and probability in maths you might like this branch.
