How to get a bank account?

How do I get my bank to return the money they seized from my bank account as part of a default judgment after reaching a successful settlement?

  • My bank seized all the money from my bank account (around $3k) plus around $21,000 as part of a default judgment. I settled with the creditor for a $1,000 lump payment and a monthly $500 payment until the $5k debt is extinguished. The bank just removed the $21,000 hold but hasn't returned the $3,000. Bank customer service is near useless. The lawyers suing me are also clueless. WTF do I do to get my money back? The creditor is Columbia University - not a debt collector - and it's for unpaid tuition (long story).

  • Answer:

Petition the court where the judgment was entered providing proof of the payment plan (and that you are complying with it).  The court should enter an order allowing the bank to unfreeze the funds.
