How to get a good salary job in the medical field?

Is physics a good field to get into in terms of salary and job availability?

  • Assuming highest degree is a phd

  • Answer:

Yes and no. Physics is terrible as a career, but a physics degree is something of a "scientific liberal arts" degree that can get you into a lot of other fields. The thing that I find physics useful is that you end up asking "deep questions".  For example, "what is a field and why does it matter?"  Once you ask that question, you quickly realize that you are making assumptions about how the academic and job market are supposed to work.  Do they actually work in that way. The thing that I like about a physics degree is that it is great preparation for careers that don't exist yet.  For example, I ended up doing a lot of web programming, and I couldn't have gotten a degree in that in 1991, because the web had not been invented yet.

I don't know about opportunities outside of India. But inside India, the answer, I believe, is a no. The only job market that I can think of for a Physics major in India is academia (which, according to me, is an excellent option). Of course, there are companies like IBM which recruit PhDs in Physics but they take very few people from India and not on a regular basis. Openings for Physics majors are also advertised by government organizations and research labs such as ISRO, DRDO etc but they can be very competitive and I am not sure how many openings they have per year.
