What should schools teach?

If you were to teach in an architectural school, what are the key points you would like to pass on to your students, which are not usually taught in schools?

  • I recently read this essay by Le Corbusier 'If I had to teach Architecture' in which he describes his ideas - from technique of sketching to design approaches which he would like his students to develop. Not all schools are perfect. What would you like to share with your students to make the schools better?

  • Answer:

Interesting question. Thanks A2A . I actually teach in an architecture school as a guest faculty. Well, the question ask for a some key-points for students which are not taught in schools usually, so answer would be a little in-depth. Architecture is a profession of inhabiting. It means the profession of architecture aims for the design of habitat, which comprehensively means an inclusive design of co-existence, ecologically and socially responsible design of habitable spaces. Where aesthetics is inherently required, what is normally ignored is the social and ecological beauty. So my key-points are basically the same old issues with new insights and vantage points! Seek social & ecological beauty before aesthetics An architect need to be a sensitive human being first before being an expert in a field. Many times, common sense beats the expertise. Put off  your expert's spectacles every now and then. Observation is the most important of tools for an architect. Creativity is the fuel for an architect and great ideas are the warmth from it. Original ideas might lead the world/humanity even after you have left it. Try to be original. By reading, analysing, discussing, thinking, reflecting, talking, travelling, sketching, painting, photographing, wandering, try to make your opinion on the basis of your own logics. That would guide you in your journey. Take nothing as a belief, make your own exploration to learn or unlearn things. More than anything, your own explorations are more valuable than anything else in the world. Finally, there are no rules/ key-points for anything you want to pursue.
