What is service contract?

For which electronics and appliances does it make the most sense to purchase a service contract, and what is the optimal duration of such a contract?

  • Everywhere I look retailers are pushing service contracts. I know most of them are bad deals, but some of them aren't. Which are those?

  • Answer:

The only recommendation for a service contract that ever made sense to me was the service contract on laptop computers in the early 1980s, because lids and display screens were the source of frequent problems due to their fragility.  It took my laptop a couple of years to develop a problem with the wiring harness of the screen, and I was pleased to have the extended warranty and service. Most items come with a new-products warranty that lasts long enough to discover manufacturing errors, on the order of 90 days, and that's enough.

Extended warranties are pushed because they are a huge money maker. It always aggrevates me to be asked about an extended warranty. I will often reply with "why, is it going to break that soon?" or words to that effect. Buy with a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty.
