Can an Indian student studying law in India after graduating practice in America or the UK? If he can, then what are the required norms to go through?

Answer:
There are a few states that let people with law degrees from other countries sit for their bar. I think NY is one of them. Check with their bar association and possibly the American Bar Association to find out what the necessary steps are to become licensed.

To add a couple of unqualified details to Tina's response (I am not an attorney): you are correct about the issues with the law: each country has its own laws and regulations, so it's impossible to take a person with a legal degree from Iceland and expect that this person will be successful in immediately practicing law in US it is possible to learn the law: you were not born with your knowledge, so it's possible to learn it all; just know that you have to invest time in it arrival in US: to arrive here, your degree won't play a role since it's of no use in US (it's of use in your geography but not in either US or UK), so you will need a proper sponsorship or a valid visa which will allow you to seek employment post-passing of that bar exam bar exam: it's an exam applicable for each state; and it allows you to practice ONLY in that state; if in the future you move outside the state and want to establish practice there, you will have to sit for the new bar exam again (after having had studied the local laws which will be a bit different from the laws of the state you were originally in) what law will you practice? criminal? personal injury? corporate? there are too many possibilities, and each of them will push you down further into a niche specialization from which few lawyers can rarely recover: let's say you will go into criminal law, then decide that it's not for you and instead you'd rather deal with corporations and contracts and mergers/acquisitions; or real estate; it will mean that you have to start anew and learn the industry specifics from zero If you're ready for all this work and test preparations, and your immigration issues have been thought through and resolved, then by all means go through it.

Immediately after graduating, without any additional requirements? No, at least not in the US. In order to practice law in the US, one needs a license to practice, which is awarded after passing the bar exam of the state in which he/she seeks to practice. Eligibility to sit for the bar is conditioned on having a JD (Juris Doctor) degree from a university accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), in almost every state in the US. Therefore, your Indian law degree in itself would not be adequate to practice law in the US. You'll need to do a JD (which is a 3 year graduate course) after you complete your L.L.B in India (or B.A/L.L.B etc. if you're doing an integrated course), to be able to practice law. Doing an L.L.M is not adequate either.
