A major in Photography or Graphic Design?

What is the importance of graphic design in photography?

  • I am tentatively considering going into the photography industry and have been told that I should study graphic design if I'm going to do photography. Could someone please explain what the significance of graphic design is to photography?

  • Answer:

I don't think you necessarily have to study graphic design in order to be good at photography. If you have an eye for photography go ahead and do it. The best way in my opinion to excel in photography is to shoot in only black and white for a year, it'll really help you learn composition quickly.

I don't believe you need to study graphic design to be a good photographer. Graphic design can help with the design of an image - the way the eye flows through and image and visually communicating an idea or story. If your interest is photography then I would suggest a photography course.
