How can Magento help web developers sell Magento Go?

  • Now that Magento Go has reduced the cost of a modern, PCI compliant website to $15 per month or free for a year, how can it help the thousands of web developers who have been selling its solution face to face? If you are a developer or designer, now may be the perfect time to create an extension or theme for Magento's new app store. You will have no clients to answer to and selling Magento app's can be profitable (e.g. http://onestepcheckout.com sold over 3,000 extensions starting at €245). However, it was a lot easier to make money selling Magento stores before Magento Go. By lowering the costs of ecommerce stores Magento Go has disrupted many web developers in its ecosystem. Like Groupon's sales network they are key to its sustained growth. How should Magento reward its developer community so they will continue to sell their solution?

Magento Go didn't disrupt web developers. It's not competing in the same industry. Magento Go is a SaaS solution. It will bite into a piece of cookie from other SaaS eCommerce solutions - it will not affect the amount of work in the custom development or custom design industry.

I agree with Roy and Toni, Magento Go will only HELP the other Magento offerings by drawing more attention to the platform.  When users of Go build their business enough to justify the investment in a more flexible platform they will graduate to the Professional or Enterprise editions. As a Design and Development house, I know we would love to have more savvy, Magento using business owners ready to invest in the next phase of their business! Ultimately I think this is a good move by Magento to capture a larger part of the market and gain some more customer loyalty.

According to me it's not contending in the same business. Magento Go is a Saas result. It will nibble into a bit of treat from different Saas ecommerce results - it won't influence the measure of work in the custom improvement.
