What's an easy way to receive my SMS messages in an email or on the web, even from a dedicated virtual number?

(For two-factor authentication; useful for international travel) Most US banks do not use two-factor authentication but most international banks use one form or another of it: either a token device or SMS. Which is great, until you leave your county or lose your mobile or token. Which is not a big deal in your home country, both of these can be easily replaced. But when you are abroad; good luck. (1) So I find the best way to handle the situation is to receive your SMS numbers by email or on the web. Let's assume your bank or whatever service you have signed up for w/ two-factor authentication (Twitter, Gmail) supports an international number to send you your SMS-es. Then you just need a (preferably free or low-cost) service provider who offers such a service. Question is, do you know of any? I know Pinger but I wouldn't trust it: it's SMS numbers die in a month if you are not active. (2) Worst case, you have to build a virtual device from a cheap Android phone or something to send you your SMS-es after you. While this can easily be done by an app but I'd like to use (1) if at all possible. (2) is not that elegant, reliable or robust.

Google Voice at http://voice.google.com provides a free number for voice and SMS, and can be programmed to forward SMS messages to email.

Ironically, just today I figured out a quick way to provide a virtual US SMS number that will deliver to an email address (and can be responded to by reply to the email if desired) using some of our underlying services. Not free but probably around $10/month or less if paid in advance. There is no commercial website for it yet so probably best to message me here if interested.

Google Voice can forward SMS to emails, but I'm not sure it will work outside the US or Canada. You could also try http://IFTTT.com. IFTTT allows you to do something like, "If I receive an SMS at this number, forward it to my gmail account." It's very simple to use.

Hmm. Check a virtual number for SMS. You may look it at http://almostfreecalls.net or http://freeje.com/en
