How does Stack Exchange's authorization works?

Has there been any academic research using Stack Overflow or Stack Exchange?

  • Are there any working or published papers (particular in social science) that study Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow? It seems like an interesting environment to study gamification, public goods contributions, etc.

  • Answer:

Yes... there have been at least five that I know of. I don't know the details or publication locations, but some of the researchers who have studied Stack Exchange include: Ashton Anderson and Jure Leskovec at Stanford, with Daniel Huttenlocher and Jon Kleinberg at Cornell Yla Tausczik and J.W. Pennebaker at Texas Christoph Treude and Margaret-Anne Storey at Victoria [Canada], with Ohad Barzilay at Tel Aviv I know that I'm leaving out several others that escape my memory at the moment. A better source of information about this might be on Stack Overflow itself, specifically Meta Stack Overflow (http://meta.stackoverflow.com) -- the Q&A site *about* Stack Overflow
