What are some good colleges for programming/software engineering?

Why do so many engineering colleges in India have glamorized gaming?

• For most I know, AOE and CS are the COOL stuff that engineering grads do in India. Sadly, most of the top engineering colleges also have the same culture. Does it has anything to do with the fact that gamers are considered COOL/STUDS at engineering colleges? How bad is it for the colleges?

  Because playing computer games is extremely fun to play and even watch, easy to set up and join, can be played at any time of the day/night, and is a great way to relax after a hard day. In a hostel full of similar minded people of the same age, it is easy to find people who will play with (or against) you. The gaming culture in colleges comes from students choosing the easiest way to spend their time outside academic work. It serves the double purpose of being extremely entertaining while allowing you to be lazy. While games can be huge time killers, bad for health (Sitting motionless continuously for hours wouldn't affect your life in a good way) and addictive, depending on the game, it helps your observation skill, planning, reflexes and instinctive thinking, and in some cases, keeps you away from worse addictions. As for your second sub-question, no. Student gamers are in most cases, but with a lot of exceptions, introverts who don't spend too much time outside their computers. Generally in colleges, no one is considered "a stud" or cool just because they are pro gamers, if they are at all. People are judged or considered cool by considering more conventional talents like literary, music, art, dance, coding or academics. Even once you're in a circle of people who play the same game, how well you play earns you respect. It is only as bad for colleges as having sports teams (though I wouldn't say it is nearly as good). From the academic point of view, when intelligent minds come together, it is only natural that sub-cultures and common interests come up and gaming has always been considered in those lines, just like how a person is interested in poetry or web development or solving puzzles.
