Where can I find good regional Mexican food in San Francisco?
-
I'm from Los Angeles and some of my favorite Mexican restaurants there are not your typical taco & burrito joints but purveyors of more unique regional cuisine. There are many great Oaxacan, Yucatanian, etc restaurants that serve food completely different than what many people consider Mexican food and they span the gamut of funkiness to fanciness. I'm surprised similar food is so hard to find in SF. Extra points for places that don't even serve burritos. The one place I've been to, La Quaxaquena, I frankly found disappointing.

Since posting this question, I've had fabulous "Mayan" (read: Yucatanian with a little flair) at Haltun at 21st & Treat: http://www.yelp.com/biz/haltun-mayan-cuisine-san-francisco I was incredibly disappointed by the mole at Regalito: http://www.yelp.com/biz/regalito-rosticeria-san-francisco and I still haven't tried Poc Chuc (the restaurant, I've had the dish) The next place on my list to try is La Torta Gorda which I understand is not limited to just tortas: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-torta-gorda-san-francisco

Try http://donpistos.com/ in North Beach. One of my favorite Mexican places in the city.

The taquerias and inexpensive places in SF that you might consider typical are a mishmash but many seem to have a strong basis in Jalisco-style. Some popular dishes like pozole, birria, menudo, and guacamole are strong there, and many precolumbian. Then seafood cocktails. There's a fair amount of Yucatan influence too. It's just so ubiquitous it doesn't feel regional. And then I guess you could say the Mission Burrito, it's regional to San Francisco.

Chilango for authentic street food, Nopalito for a fancier version but still different than Taqueria style

I haven't eaten much Yucatanean but Poc Chuc on 16th was quite good the time I ate there. 'Savory' in a word.
