What are some different career options for a Computer major?

What are the best paying career options for a computer science major?

  • I'm currently pursuing a computer science degree at a top engineering/computer science university, and want to find out more about career options to help pay off my massive student loans as soon as possible. I'm going to be starting a summer internship at Google this summer, and ideally I'd like to stay in the industry but I would also like to seek out related options in other fields like the finance industry to help chart out my first few years after graduation.

  • Answer:

A job in finance will pay better than a job at Google. However, you'll be more than able to handle your student loans on your Google salary, and in return, you get to work on projects that actually matter, in a company that builds software for its existence, with people who could become startup co-founders of yours, etc. Paying off the loans 3 years earlier with the finance job is a very bad long-term deal, unless you think finance is cool and want to work in that industry.

I graduated with an undergraduate CS degree about three years ago. Of my cohort, the order of average current net worth by current career path is: Facebook employees Hedge fund quants Investment bankers Hedge fund technologists Engineers at established tech companies (Google, Apple, etc.) Startup engineers Startup founders PhD students But in 20 years, I expect the order of average net worth by initial career path to be more like: Startup founders Hedge fund quants Investment bankers Facebook employees Startup engineers Hedge fund technologists Engineers at established tech companies PhD students Note that there is usually plenty of opportunity to move among these career paths over time. I've seen people move from financial technologist to quant, from startup employee to startup founder, from PhD student to quant, from quant to engineer at established tech company, from startup engineer to PhD student, etc.
