What is a shorthand?

What words do you commonly use to write in shorthand?

  • Give examples of words you write in shorthand when you are taking notes at work, in college or when you are just brainstorming. Would you consider it as an integral part of the citizen journalism style guide. Example: backword - bk/word, bk/stage, production prodn, within - w/in, input - i/p, government - govt etc

  • Answer:

    ppl = people cust = customer hlp = help w/ = with accnt = account gov = government biz = business ph# = phone number accnt# = account number # = number sup = supervisor esc = escalation adj = adjustment p/w = password win = windows

I very rarely write in short or long hand these days and I have never been able to grasp, or decipher, Twitter shorthand.  It's a whole different language to me.  And if I'm being honest, I hate it.  Call me old fashioned that way...

I developed my own shorthand in college and med school. It does not help anyone else but me. I think it is best to have your own, then you can use 1 or 2 letters for a word.

I only write in shorthand while making personal notes. Here are a few: 1. Any word that starts with 'trans' or 'cross', I replace it with X.     Transport = X-port     Transform = X-form     Transcript = X-cript     Crossword = X-word     Crosshead = X-head (it is a part of an engine). 2. Any word that has suffix '-tion', I replace it with a 'n superscript'.     Communication = communic superscript n.     Radiation = rad superscript n.     Transformation = X-form superscript n. 3. I prefer to use slash (/) sign in a few words:     without = w/o     password = p/w     signature = s/n     chapter = c/h

I'm not writing things anymore - I either record speech or take pictures of relevant text or save files with presentations or typing up emails, where shorthand is not permitted (unless there are custom entries in the dictionary which are set to autocorrect any abbreviations).

Personally I always write half of a word and complete it afterwards when I am reading through what I have written.  This actually helps me to keep in mind the things I have learned. Apart from that the shortforms make me confused as I forget what a short form stood for and there are not always helpful short forms for everything you learn e.g. at school or college.  An example of how I usually write in hurry at school : The Lor... force affects ele... in a magn... field. It looks like a cloze test!

Not much. I don't really use writing while brainstorming. And rarely make notes. So I generally write words in full.
