How long should a resume be for a computer professional?

As someone without a degree in Computer Science and no professional programming experience, should I be advertising that I completed a developer bootcamp on my resume?

  • I'd like to provide you with a quick background on my situation to the question above. I am a recent graduate of a developer bootcamp. Info about the bootcamp: It is the only bootcamp that offers its students the option of no upfront tuition. Instead, the student pays a percentage of their first year salary over a six month period commencing on the start of their employment after the course. If after a year the student has not found employment in the software industry, the student does not pay for their learning experience. It has an admissions process that consists of several tests and interviews, accepts less than five percent of its applicants, and has an attrition rate of ten to fifteen percent. Students either quit or are dismissed if they cannot keep up with the material, weekly tests are given to measure a student's comprehension. The course is difficult and requires you to actually learn the material. You are not there to complete assignments and graduate. You are there to get practice coding and most importantly, to learn how to learn so that you are prepared to enter the workforce. However, many other bootcamps aren't as strict about the students they graduate and as a result, some bootcamps' students aren't as well prepared. My situation: Some have advised me against putting that I went to a bootcamp, while others have encouraged me to provide that information. I do have a portfolio of code on my GitHub that was created during the twelve week course and one deployed web application, both listed on my resume. I have only listed my most recent professional experience on my resume, and excluded all others. I'm hearing a lot of different opinions and wanted to know how some professionals in the industry felt. Thank you so much for your time.

  • Answer:

Rather than just say that you attended a bootcamp (yawn), describe specifics of what you accomplished there (e.g. developed an application that does x in n weeks). Some companies will look at your education history as a filter and question your lack of formal education, but many will not, since diplomas are not a particularly good filter for employers to find good developers. Remember that you're not trying to look good to all companies, but to companies where you'll fit well. This will mean a company that bases their hiring decisions on realistic skill tests, instead of scratching people off the list by GPA.

The boot camp is normally given in the context of a job. So highlight the job and what you did there. Additionally, you really have no choice but to mention the boot camp to pass the "education" filter. You can emphasize the competitiveness of the program.

You should definitely advertise that you have completed a boot camp.  Some employers actually prefer applicants with practical skills from a boot camp over applicants with an academic degree. In either case, however, where you went to school is not as important as what you did there.  Employers are most interested in seeing work you have done previously, especially if it demonstrates your ability to quickly grasp big concepts. If you excelled in a rigorous boot camp, you will come out of it with a respectable portfolio that many employers should be pleased to see. I graduated recently from RefactorU, a coding bootcamp in Boulder, Colorado, and now I have an awesome job as a software developer. None of the companies I interviewed with seemed to mind that I studied psychology in undergrad.
