What is marketing and its roles?

What are the main roles of central or global marketing teams in IT companies like TCS, CTS etc?

• I am trying to figure out what exactly do these marketing teams do? Does the global marketing team also include sales people who sign up new prospects in target geographies from where the business flows in?

  Sales and marketing are separate functions. Marketing is usually split into two categories viz. Business/Unit marketing and corporate marketing. 1. Business marketing - this part is usually aligned with the various lines of businesses of the organization and works closely with the sales team. Their job is to support the respective sales teams in providing the customers the latest collaterals, participation in events, managing workshops and liason with other teams to facilitate business growth for that LOB. 2 . Corporate Marketing - responsible for overall corporate brand, internal marketing activities, employee branding, company level PR, analyst and advisory relations and thought leadership platforms.
