What exactly is an RSS feed and how/why would you use one?

How does one use an RSS feed?

  • Answer:

An RSS feed lists new things on a website. Most of the time this concerns new posts (articles) on a news site (blog). You can collect links to RSS feeds in an RSS reader. From that moment on, you only have to visit your RSS reader to see whether there is any news on the websites you follow. RSS can inform you on new stuff happening on hundreds of websites in seconds. I use Feedly as the backbone for RSS and as a webbased reader. On my smartphone/tablet/notebook I have clients that sync with Feedly (the app is called "Reeder"). Most of the time, I don't read the articles but only scan the headlines. From Reeder I can easily swipe the article to read it later using another app: Pocket.
