Is it easier to get a job in Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science?

I am doing a Bachelor's of Technology in computer science and engineering at an IIT and I maintain my CGPA to 7 and excel only in web development. Will I be able to get a good job?

  • P.S.: I dont learn Web D to get a job, I learn it because I love it

  • Answer:

It entirely depends what you mean with "a good job". I suspect that what to me is a good job is not what you consider a good job and I'd suspicious the same is true for other people that commented. What I often hear from people I mentor with job hunting is that they studied this and that to get a job as a web developer when that was largely useless. Conversely if you want a job at Google (I worked there) you need to know theoretical stuff like algorithms inside out (altho you may never apply it in your job, depends where you end up, but that's another story). Also generally most entry job you get out of uny aren't "good jobs" in my book. For that it's a matter of experience and hard work (and if you can out of the job experience, like strong contributions to open source). hope that helps and if you'd like to chat you can sign up for one of my open mentoring slots (I do them as a way to give back to the community): http://j.mp/shspike spike / @spikelab / http://spikelab.org

A2A From an American perspective, it's hard to say since we use a 4.0 GPA scale. Go out there and get your name known. Set up an amazing website and be diligent. Best of luck.

Yes, you can. There are few web based startups where you can get good job, good work and competent package. For example: expedia, slideshare (acquired by LinkedIn), snapdeal etc. Explore more.

Of course you will if you excel in web development. It is much better to be good at something that to be a Jack in all trades. And just in case you have trouble finding a job, there are many websites currently offering you jobs for customers - Freelancing.
