What are the career prospects of studying metallurgy and material engineering?

What are the placement prospects of a student pursuing a B.Tech in metallurgy and materials engineering in IIT Madras?

  • Answer:

I don't agree with the answer which Sourabh Gupta has given. A brief background about me. I graduated from IIT Madras in 2013 with my majors in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Via Campus placements I landed up a job with Flipkart. However I had written CAT and did well there and therefore took up PGP course at IIM Bangalore. My 4 years of experience in Metallurgy department were nothing short of memorable. However i did learn a few important things during these 4 years. First do things you like to do. Not everything has to be linked for CV and thereby for getting a job. Do things that give you pleasure and so that you can learn from them. Initially you might feel what is there in Metallurgy. Just this mindset will pull you down withouy even exploring the field. I did two interns and a research project in Metallurgy and Materials science before coming to the conclusion of switching to Management side. It was after indepth thought and research that I could come upto this decision. And I have friends who got good core metallurgical jobs just because they loved the subject and knew where to look for. So there is a lot of scope in Metallurgy. Agreed that the CS people get paid probably the best in campus. But for that they also put in the most effort on campus. They are probably the smartest brains on campus and there is nothing wrong if they get paid more than you. However you need to realize that campus job is not the end of the world for you. It is your first job for god sakes. It gives you an opportunity to explore the corporate world. On an average no IITian sticks with his first job for more than 1.5 years. You switch. Same can be done via Metallurgy. Also you have to understand that all are at the same level when it comes to campus placements at IIT. You get a job based on what you bring to the table. If you are good you will get a job which you deserve. So chill and study and make the most of the 4/5 years at IIT Madras because these are probably going to be the best years of your life.

I am about to graduate from IIT- Madras this month with a degree in Engineering Design. I'll try to answer your question with my knowledge and personal judgement of our placement season which took place last December. If you are not in Computer Science or Electrical Science department. You are fucked. Your major doesn't really matter now! If you are the kind of guy who wants to get a job in the core industry which is metallurgy in this case, you have to maintain your CGPA above 7-8 depending upon the company you are shortlisted for and to the extent for my memory serves, I didn't see any core company in metallurgy in my season. Do we really have this industry in India? If you are looking for a job in any high-paying company just like 90% other IITians, you have to sit for several written or online exams where your specialization doesn't matter at all except in some cases but they don't really constitute significantly. Mantra for getting such jobs is to build your personality and your resume. You have to maintain a decent CGPA as well so that you don't get chucked out because of their HR policies. I hope I made some sense!
