How do I learn to write English like a pro?
-
I am a non Native English speaker from India, I am desperately looking to improve my English writing skills. Please give suggestions of being able to write English essays, quora answers, Blogs like a pro, and how much time it will take to master the English writing skills.

Answer:
Pick up 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. It helps you build your vocabulary by helping you understand the origin and roots of words. It becomes much easier to pick up new words and derivatives once you understand how it works. Read as much as you can, preferably in the genre you want to write proficiently in. Publications like The Hindu use a very good vocabulary and writing style. Practice writing. Pick a topic and start writing whatever comes to your mind. These things should give you a good start. Thanks for the A2A.

Hi, Thanks for the A2A. First of all, be proud of yourself because you are already good at writing in English. =) It really takes time for us non-Native English speakers to learn the language in written and spoken forms. But there is no deadline, to be honest. It is a continuous process if you want to be fluent. And you will discover new and deeper English words as you go on. In my experience, school is the top reason why I am good at writing and speaking in English because many of our schools and universities here the Philippines are using this language as a medium of teaching. Working with international clients/companies has also sharpened my English-speaking and writing abilities. When I was young I used to watch Sesame Steet, so that was another indirect way of learning for me. =) Take your time in writing articles for your blog and in answering questions here on Quora. Practice and ask someone who is a Native English speaker (could be a friend of yours or classmate or colleague) to listen to you when you speak and/or read your blog posts and Quora answers. It is also best to visit websites that are focused on helping people in writing better. You can also just look for specific websites that teach English to non-Natives like this one: http://www.usingenglish.com/articles/becoming-fluent-in-speaking-writing-english.html They have quizzes, tutorials, articles and other useful info you can learn from. As I said earlier, practice. And don't be afraid to commit grammar or spelling errors - take advantage of those times to learn and improve. Good luck!

Thanks for the A2A! While I can't claim to be a pro, I've learned the language well enough to work as a proof reader and I hope to become a published author eventually. How to write like a pro? You write English as often as humanly possible, and you ask that those who read whatever you write give you suggestions on how to improve the text. In the global, online world we live in, it's never been easier to communicate with people in other countries and get their help. I learned a lot while playing online games and chatting on forums as a teenager. But writing isn't enough, you should also read as much quality text as you can. There's a plethora of good authors in every genre, find one you like and start reading. I myself used Terry Pratchett for this purpose because he's got my kind of humour so it wasn't a chore, and he's brilliant with the English language. It doesn't matter what you read though, as long as it's well written and you enjoy doing it. I hope this helps!

1. Read. As much as you can. 2. Understand the world. Have opinions. And when your views don't match with those of the people of the rest of the world, you will yourself learn to write through public forums, giving your notions and opinions regarding things. ;) On a more serious note, start writing a personal (and private, if you wish) blog on a daily basis and treat it like your best friend. Tell him each and every thing in English and there, you have it! If not pro, you will definitely become comfortable writing your views in English.
