Who work for Bangalore -Infosys?

What can I do to make the best out of the opportunity given to me to work as a fresher at Infosys (System Engineer Trainee)?

  • I don't wish to go to infosys. But I guess I am out of all options. My ambition is to be a network architect in 6 years from now. The joining of infosys came far too early than i was expecting. Now I have no time to hunt for start ups? How can I leverage my skills and move in the direction of networking in an IT giant like infosys?

Hey Anon! I thought I was reading my own story when I read your question!! Boring Part where I tell my Story: Even I graduated and wanted to go find jobs in networking firms or start-ups. I had good acads, two internships, a paper published in wireless networking. And I thought I had good chances. How wrong I could be? I applied in Siemens, Cisco, Airtight networks (was a startup in Pune), Aruba networks. But I didn't actually know anybody in these firms and I guess my resume was in the pile of equally qualified people as me. I had to join Infosys for lack of any options. It would be 2 years and 8 months later that I could quit Infosys for higher education. Part where you can learn from my exp: So I joined Infosys reluctantly. However I did have an open mind and was on look out for other jobs. I did learn a lot of programming at Infy. C, Java, SQL, PLSQL, Unix that I don't think I could have otherwise. I got to learn how an enterprise operates. How the clients are serviced and how to meet timelines and be professional about it. I was starting to build my own brand at Infy and that matters any place you go. I suggest you learn as much as there is to learn. I was put in a Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) unit which had nothing much challenging on the technical front but so much on the functional side of things. I had to deal with financial terms and I used to interact with consultants trying to understand these terms. I started developing passion for finance like I had once for networking. I gave the Chartered Financial Analyst exam and did well in it. I got more functional roles then on after and I liked it there. So my advice to you is this: 1) Feel lucky: Not many people get jobs that easily. You have an opportunity to learn something which isn't in your area of expertise or liking; take it as a challenge rather than a burden. 2) Focus: See if you really, really want to get into networking, be on a look out for opportunities. Else ask your managers or your HR to check if they have opportunities in these fields. Many a times there wouldn't be; don't be disheartened. 3) Be best at what you do: Do your job best. Make it a habit. Especially when you don't like what you do. Goes a long way, even after you quit your organization. PM me anytime you feel like!

Sadly, you don't have an option. They will train you in whatever technology they feel like. But yes I can assure that the trainings would be good. If I'd be in your place I would have learned as much as I can during trainings. Then join Infosys as a fresher most probably I'll be on bench for sometime so at that time I can work my way towards some networking certifications. Leave the company within in an year to catch hold of some good networking companies. If you get a project that too a crappy one ask for a release and vehemently look for projects that interests you. But too be honest little can be done. You can also leave the company right away after trainings but bond money could be a problem. Or you can join EnR which may be a good option. As a launching pad Infosys is not a bad company if you land yourself in a good project.
