What are the core Aerospace Engineering jobs in India? Which companies recruit and from which colleges?
-
Aerospace Engineering is one the most challenging disciplines. Many famous colleges and some lesser known colleges offer courses in this. However the future of these students is very uncertain, if, say they pursue this course from a non-recognized college. I would like to know what are the actual job prospects in this field and which companies employ Bachelors of Aerospace/Aeronautics Engineering degree holders and preferably from which colleges.

Answer:
The government sector usually would give you the most challenging careers. Companies like ISRO, HAL, NAL, DRDO (ADE, ADA) etc offer some challenging projects in millitary, jets, trainers, transport, UAVs etc. But be warned, government projects are quite slow moving and long term careers. Also that is the trend in the industry, normal design cycle goes in years, more years for development and certification. Most students who enter this field for degree don't actually end up in aerospace jobs due to this in the past few decades. However things are changing now. Now there are private companies like Mahindra, Tata, Godrej who make parts and small aircraft. Also you have MNC design offices of Airbus, Boeing, Goodrich, GE etc. To get a good job, referrals would be better than waiting for campus placements. Also there are companies that make small small systems specially Avionics. L&T had plans to enter aircraft part making in a big way. Then there are smaller companies who provide very small UAVs for video shooting and small time video surveillance. And just a bachelor's degree would take a long time to make a mark in this field. It would be more logical to go for higher studies as its a technologically intensive field full of multi-disciplinary challenges. The salaries won't compare with the IT/Software domain in any way but would be decent enough. The prospects are better for more commercial work like mechanical part design, avionics systems design etc.

I'm an aerospace engineering graduate who got his degree from one of the CIS countries. I didn't stay behind and I came home hoping to get into the defense forces. Unfortunately, as four years passed by, things had changed in India and I realized that the DRDO was not really in the mood to hire freshers. ISRO did not conduct its exams for engineering entries. Besides, I was a foreign graduate and that meant I received second priority. Private companies do have research labs and often get a number of works from foreign clients and mostly use software to design and analyze models. However, they usually require candidates with some sort of experience in the field. I remember I applied to Boeing india last year to their junior design engineer opening but never received a reply. Honestly, I've never received any reply from the hundred +companies I've applied to, till date, even when I'm proficient in CAD and CFD As a result, I'm leaving India once again and may or may not come back. The best bet for me, personally, is to go for a master degree program and try to settle down somewhere with a job that you are comfortable in. P.S this is based on my experience. It can be quite different for other graduates and may or may not relate to my story.
