What is the best way to reach your startup target market without a product?
-
Our product is a p2p sharing web platform with an expected launch in a month and the market we current focus on is travelers. We've had a launch page up for about 3 months now that has a signup sheet for people to leave their emails. We're active on Twitter (a few thousand followers), pretty active on FB (a few hundred followers, yes big disparity) and we've collected a few hundred emails from our website signup. In addition, we've been somewhat active on forums, but they are a pain in the rear bc you can't post/advertise and when you answer other questions (unrelated to your product), you can't even leave a URL in the signature w/o a premium plan, so this plan has sort of been dumped. We also regularly attend live events to chat with our market in person and have also searched the WWW for travel bloggers and emailed them one by one. The only other thing I can think of is chatting with strangers at the airport (kinda stalker-like, but not out of the question until we get arrested). Unfortunately, I feel like we're stagnating in terms of ways to reach our audience wo emailing people one by one. What am I missing?

Answer:
This is exactly the kind of commitment needed from people to earn huge success "kinda stalker-like, but not out of the question until we get arrested" I appreciate the passion. This sends a loud message you're hungry and will stop at nothing to find success. Good on you! Now, to address the question. You don't specify a budget so I'll assume you're operating in a lean Start up mode since you don't want to pay the premium subscription fees to some relevant industry sites. Also, because you are willing to deploy Guerrilla style marketing. Here's a couple of things you might want to consider. 1. Write a high quality PR piece targeted towards your primary audience. Distribute the piece to various online PR sites. 2. Write an announcement explaining your business to your community including your contact information. This should be a very brief description, think of it as a coversheet for your PR piece. Send the announcement with the PR piece attached to the editor, the travel section editor. and topics writer(s) to your local and regional papers. 3. Attend as many meet up meetings in your local area as possible. Don't be the self promotion "that guy", but wear a shirt or tag that encourages people to ask you what you do. You can often sponsor these meetings for very little money. 4. Go to some businesses surrounding the airport(s) and ask them for permission to leave information on your Start up. The businesses that get highest traffic near the airports are car rental agencies (not all of them are onsite, but try those too) hotels, nearby restaurants, Starbucks/Quiznos, etc. If you haven't already done so join some related groups on LinkedIn or some Linkedin groups for your specific area and start communicating. Again, you don't want to be "that guy" but you can genuinely contribute to the conversation and people will respond if its believable. They will go to your profile and check you out if they like what you have to say. Update your profile to explain what it is your new company does, and how to find it. People have a tendency to respond to an authentic message so whatever you do, do, make sure you're doing it for reasons more than just self promotion.

Among those who you have contacted via your start-up idea(http://Spacehitch.com), who are most enthusiastic? I think the best enthusiasts on your idea will be the future of your service. And I guess youâll need to listen to the voice of http://Spacehitch.comâs passionate fans. It is very important to acquire the best early adopter for start-up service and the size of fandom doesnât matter. And also important that tens or hundreds of crazy fans come together and enjoy the service for 24 hours. After that, new start-up service will scale itself.
